The Big Island is the youngest of the Hawaiian Islands,
so young that in fact, it is still being created by Mother Nature every
day. The world’s largest and most active volcano – Kilauea – is located
here. It spews out lava almost daily, which can be seen flowing down
the cliffs and into the ocean, a truly spectacular sight, especially
at night. Kilauea is just one of the Big Island’s superlatives. The
island is so large and has so much to offer it is difficult to ever
get bored.
Did you know that the Big Island is home to the tallest mountain in
the world when measured from the ocean floor? Mauna Kea rises 13,796
feet above sea level and another 17,000 feet lie beneath the water’s
surface. On top of Mauna Kea is the world’s largest observatory for
astronomy.
The Big Island’s black sand beaches are another favorite visitor attraction.
These beaches are not just called like that. The sand is indeed pitch
black and the ocean water a dark blue. Simply an unusual and amazing
sight. Don’t forget to visit charming Hilo Town, located on the island’s
eastern coast. Not only is this picturesque town home to the tallest
coconut tree in Hawaii (92 feet), but it also has many interesting museums,
gardens and even a zoo. The Big Island, which is larger than all the
other Hawaiian Islands combined, is truly a superb place to spend a
Hawaii vacation.
